February 2016

The Fillmore w/ Guster!

Performing Lost and Gone Forever in its entirety plus a set of Guster favorites.“I told Swift that our last two records took a year each to make," laughs Guster’s Ryan Miller. “He told me he’d never spent more than nine days on an album." The band and producer got together anyway and the result is Evermotion, an album of raw acid-soaked chamber pop, and a stylistic departure that no one saw coming.Guster sought out Shins keyboardist/Black Keys bassist Richard Swift based on his work with Damien Jurado and Foxygen, giving themselves over to the full experience of recording at Swift’s Cottage Grove, Oregon studio for three weeks in January 2014.“It wasn’t hard to figure out where we overlapped with Swift," adds percussionist/drummer Brian Rosenworcel. “It was just a matter of trusting ourselves to go big and commit. Richard is the type of artist that’s always standing back and taking in the whole canvas."With a new looseness and swagger, Guster pushes the acoustic guitars into the background, instead exploring deeper drum grooves, keyboard textures and atmospheric noise — a language they shared easily with Swift. The band that emerged from this session sounds like one that is no longer evolving, but has evolved into something else entirely.“Richard helped us figure out what was important about recording," says guitarist Adam Gardner. “We had just one microphone over the drum kit, used whole takes, didn’t obsess over vocals or really edit things at all — it’s a raw version of our band, mistakes and all, that feels more relevant. He helped us tremendously with the big picture."Evermotion’s first single, the infectious “Simple Machine," has been hailed by TIME magazine for its “frantic beats and crawling synthesizers." The chiming lullaby of “Long Night" with its aching Ryan Miller falsetto, the shimmering “Endlessly," the distorted steel drums and Bacharach melody of “Doin’ It by Myself," the a cappella Beach Boys harmonies in the gently breezy “Lazy Love," the dream-pop of “Expectation," the British Invasion beat of “Gangway," the woozy trombones and whistling of “Never Coming Down" and the Beatle-esque psychedelia of “It Is Just What It Is" shows Guster is still learning new tricks.Since forming at Tufts University in 1992, Guster has become one of the leading indie/alternative bands, releasing seven critically acclaimed albums in 20 years, starting with Parachute in 1995. Evermotion (to be released on their own Ocho Mule label through Nettwerk Records) is the follow-up to 2010’s Easy Wonderful, which earned the band its highest-ever chart debut on the Billboard 200 at #22, while reaching #2 on both the SoundScan Alternative and iTunes charts. On Evermotion, Guster’s acoustic roots are buried deep beneath the surface, almost impossible to detect, even though every song has, at its heart, an indelible melody and more than its share of tight, lethal hooks that catch and hold. The 2010 addition of multi-instrumentalist Luke Reynolds to the core group of founding members Miller, Gardner and Rosenworcel, added immeasurably to Guster’s expanding musical palette. Evermotion marks the first time that Reynolds joined for the preproduction and writing process, which took place in Rosenworcel’s Brooklyn basement over 2012 and 2013. Reynolds’ stamp is clear and his passion is all over the record, from his guitar melodies on “Lazy Love" to his fuzz bass on “Doin’ It By Myself."Guster’s songs remain packed with hummable choruses and dense lyrical detail amid the muscular guitar riffs, clanging percussion and deceptively dark lyrics. The new album features adventurous turns on slide guitars, brassy trumpets and even a glockenspiel, with sax and trombone accompaniment by Jon Natchez, whose stints with the War on Drugs, Beirut, Passion Pit and others have led NPR to call him “indie rock’s most valuable sideman."From the start of the album, it’s clear that this is a renewed band with a bolstered purpose, a band on their own vector. Evermotion introduces you to a Guster that is free, not calculated, seasoned but loose, confident in re-shaping their legacy.

"Ondine is the tragicomic love story between a mystical creature of the deep and a mortal man, a hapless knight – often shallow, sometimes deep – in short, a real man. A fable of the follies of love, Ondine is also an exploration of our own troubled love/destruction relationship with Nature. Worlds collide and the powers mete gentle but unrelenting justice."

Our story comes to life where Land’s End meets the multitudinous seas. At Sutro Baths and Sutro Heights Park, we experience the timeless depths as we wander the hills by the sea and the remains of a giant swimming pool and regal mansion.

Audiences move with the action of the play, finding in the Park the enchanted realm of Ondine.

BODABODA + KLAXON MUTANT ALLSTARS
freewheeling, fun jazz from Italy and California

BODABODA is the cross-planetary music collaboration of saxophonist/composer Piero Bittolo Bon (Ferrara, IT) and bassist/composer LISA MEZZACAPPA (Berkeley). Inspired by classic Italian sci-fi comics, Bittolo Bon and Mezzacappa create soundtracks to vintage tales of space travel, intergalactic mayhem, and far-out mysteries of the cosmos. With a nod to pioneering musical space travelers Sun Ra, Stockhausen and Parliament Funkadelic, Bittolo Bon and Mezzacappa conjure jazz past present and future through the imagery and storytelling of 30s and 60s-era comics artists like Bonvi and Zavattini, from fractured grooves to abstract freakouts to dreamy alien landscapes.

The American version of the group makes its US debut at Duende:
Piero Bittolo Bon (IT) - saxophones
Marta Raviglia (IT) - voice
John Finkbeiner - guitar
Lisa Mezzacappa - acoustic bass
Jason Levis (DE/US) - drums

The KLAXON MUTATNT ALLSTARS is a fellowship of San Francisco Bay Area jazz musicians who play music that is playful, haunting, and exuberant, inhabiting the new musical terrain between jazz, electronica, pop, and indie rock. The Klaxons’ music is meticulously crafted and presented with joyful virtuosity, blurring the lines between composition and improvisation, acoustic and electronic, and between individual musical personalities and the lush, intoxicating sound of the whole. The band’s collective musical careers represent a distinctive Bay Area experience, and together they create music that is multi-pronged in its influences, vital in its relevance today, and boldly points towards the future.

The Odyssey on Angel Island with the WE Players

Performing with the WE Player's production of The Odyssey on Angel Island. This is a special production where you, the audience get to experience the Odyssey while exploring one of our great national parks, Angel Island. From the website "We Players brings our unique form of interactive theater and site-specific spectacle to Angel Island California State Park, the largest island in the San Francisco bay. In spring 2012 we present an island-wide, epic performance adventure of THE ODYSSEY! This all-day journey will occur throughout the hills and historic buildings, the cement bunkers and natural environs of Angel Island, surrounded by stunning view of the San Francisco Bay.

You will walk many miles, you will encounter monsters, nymphs, gods and even mere mortals. There will be feasts, libations, storms, and beach front property. You will journey to the Kingdom of the Dead, you will climb Mount Olympus and if you are brave, resilient and determined - you will reach your native land at last. May the power of Zeus be with you and may Athena guide you."

World jazz ensemble Quijeremá, and Classical Revolution’s Musical Art Quintet join forces to re-orchestrate the notions of jazz, Latin American and classical musics. Rooted in the African Diaspora of South America, Al Son del Tunduki melds the sounds of bombos, kenas and violins to reveal an unsung history.

Quijeremá and Classical Revolution’s unique relationship was born in 2009 as part of their artist residencies at the Red Poppy Art House, a hot bed of creativity in San Francisco’s own Mission District. Their collaborations produced a series of fiery performances that had audiences craving more. The Musical Art Quintet and Quijeremá both share a place in the vanguard of their respective genres, bringing chamber music and Latin American folk music into into the 21st century. While steeped in tradition, both groups transcend their genres, performing music that is truly modern and unique.

Quijeremá’s Al Son del Tunduki debuts a new repertoire of Afro-Andino material and features the performance of the Musical Art Quintet’s stellar string ensemble.

Quijeremá and Classical Revolution’s Musical Art Quintet will also celebrate the release of their respective CDs: “Kakri: Variations for the Venezuelan Bandola Llanera" and “Nuevo Chamber".
